"The Outpost" is about as average a war film as you can get. It tackles a true story in a well-known war. In this case, it covers an American battalion outpost surrounded by mountainous regions in Afghanistan and the seemingly hopeless predicament they are in after each of their commanding officers reach their end sooner than expected. The cast that we follow within said battalion have personalities and motivations that are not uncommon in most war flicks I have seen in the modern era of filmmaking. And of course, there is going to be a big battle at the climax. It is an unwritten rule in war films seemingly that there must be some sort of set piece for both sides to fight it out against each other.
Basically, what I am saying is that if you have seen every war film in the past 20 years, then you have seen "The Outpost. To better highlight the standout moments, allow me to list off the highlights this film. The film does give us a sense of ambience and atmosphere early on by showing us the environment in which our battalion is up against. An environmental shot from the ground depicting the height of the surrounding mountain areas around the titular outpost our battalion resides in shows us why these soldiers are worried about any further attacks from the Taliban. Any moment, there could be multiple snipers reigning fire down on their compound.
All that communication is done through visuals and text, so we do not need to be explained why this is a hellhole. There are also a few individual snippets of inspired human interactions and situations. There is a hilarious moment where one guy who is caught masturbating to another trooper's photo of their wife and is forced to do push-ups as punishment. You also got a trooper who was about to strip down and shower instantly being forced to shoot at the Taliban in defense of their surprise attack. In case you wonder where the term "going commando" might originate from, this is certainly one source. As a piece of filmmaking, The Outpost" is competent enough for what it is.
I must confess however in the scenes of gunplay when you have the Americans shooting at the Taliban, you cannot tell what they are shooting at most of the time. If the only visual evidence I have of the Americans killing the Afghans is through a couple individual shots through the gun's crossfire, I am not quite convinced that the threat is really there in those battle scenes. To be fair, it is a very real possibility that this is the intention from the get-go. The cast is serviceable, with the likes of Scott Eastwood and Orlando Bloom being the most famous names within the ensemble. No notable standouts though either. Mainly because the characters themselves are fairly generic and cookie-cutter for my taste.
The rate this is going so far, it would be something of a miracle if I were to remember this after a whole week had passed. It is not due to a lack of expertise or craftsmanship mind you. It is more due to the intense competition of war films released within the past two decades. And for what "The Outpost" brings to the table, there is not enough mind-blowing inspiration or challenging ideas and perspectives to be found in this title like there was in "Saving Private Ryan. This film's chances of being remembered past a one-time rental are about as slim as the battalion's chances of justifying the purpose of the aforementioned outpost within the walls of Afghanistan. In other words, do not hold your breath.
